As our Storytellers series has evolved, it has taken us all over the globe, confirming what we already knew: the fountain pen hobby is universal. Wanting to reach as many of our fellow fountain pen enthusiasts as possible, we thought there would be no better way to continue to make the series more accessible than to start publishing it in the first language of our subjects, whenever possible. The first of our Storytellers to participate in these bi-lingual editions is Christine Leineweber, who can be found on Instagram under the handle @Artleic. I am so happy to help introduce her to you in both English and her native German.

With a passion for journaling to express her thoughts and organize her life, Christine’s pages are teeming with images of something most beloved to her: spending time in nature with her family. Layered with her own paintings, unique handwriting styles, ephemera, stickers and stamps, there is so much to explore in every one of her detailed pages. Through them she does something spectacular: she bolsters and encourages our own curiosity about the world around us and teaches us how to translate that to our own pages. This is all to say that if what you are seeking is a good dose of inspiration, Artleic is the perfect place. I hope you will feel Christine’s enthusiasm as much as I did, in her feed and in her own words. It’s something we could all use a little bit more of in 2020 and I was so fortunate that Christine shared it with me, which I now pass on to you.

Herewith is our conversation:

KK: What has been the biggest surprise for you in sharing yourself through Arteleic?

KL: 🇩🇪 Ich war überrascht wie gut meine Follower es aufnahmen und wie es wie ein Lauffeuer die Runde machte und dass ich Glückwünsche zu meiner Entscheidung bekam.

🇬🇧 I was surprised my followers received it so well, that it went around like wildfire and that I got congratulated on my decision.

KK: How did you get interested in fountain pens and stationery?

KL: 🇩🇪Von meiner Kindheit an war ich fasziniert von Schreibwaren. Seit ich in der Schule schreiben lernte und meinen ersten Füller bekam. Es war ein Pelikan und bald darauf kaufte ich mir meinen ersten Lamy und entdeckte Unterschiede. Bis ich 25 Jahre alt war hatte ich weltweit etwa 36 Brieffreundschaften. Wenn meine Oma mir etwas Geld zusteckte, trug ich es sofort in einen Schreibwarenladen und kaufte mir Briefpapier, Füller oder andere Schreibwaren.

🇬🇧 I’ve been fascinated since childhood, ever since I learned to write in school and got my first pen.  It was a Pelikan and soon afterwards I bought my first Lamy and discovered there were differences.  By the time I was 25 I had about 36 pen pals worldwide.  Whenever my grandma slipped me some money, I took it to a stationery store and bought paper, pens or other stationery items.

KK: How do you decide what your daily carry is going to be?

KL: 🇩🇪 Ich habe immer ein bis zwei Füller dabei, einen Fineliner, mein Bullet Journal und mein Erfolgsjournal. Was ich mitnehme, entscheide ich aus dem Bauch heraus. Dabei sind Farben und Materialien für mich wichtig. Meistens ist es Leder und sind es Grün– und Cognac Töne. Meine Stimmung und meine Bauchstimme entscheiden auch die Wahl des Füllers und die Farbe der Tinte.

🇬🇧 I always have one or two fountain pens with me, a fineliner, my bullet journal and my success journal.  I decide using my gut what to take with me.  Colors and materials are important to me.  Mostly I enjoy leather and green and cognac tones.  My mood and my gut also determine the choice of pen and the color of the ink.

KK: Can you share some of your daily creative and writing practices?

KL: 🇩🇪 Zu meinen täglichen kreativen und schriftlichen Ritualen gehört unter anderem das Schreiben von Morgenseiten sowie die Planung und das Notieren von Todos und Terminen in meinem Bullet journal, um den Überblick zu bewahren. Außerdem notiere ich täglich mindestens 5 Erfolge in meinem Erfolgsjournal. Fast täglich schreibe ich kreative Ideen in mein Bulletjournal und kontrolliere und notiere Dinge in meinem Finanzjournal. An Wochenenden schreibe ich ab und zu auch noch Briefe. Puh, ich stelle gerade fest, ich schreibe wirkliche eine Menge.

🇬🇧 My daily creative and writing rituals include writing morning pages, planning and noting to do’s and appointments in my bullet journal in order to keep track of things.  I also write down at least 5 successes a day in my success journal.  Almost every day I write creative ideas in my bullet journal and check and note things in my financial journal.  I also write letters from time to time on weekends.  Phew, I’m just realizing, that I really write a lot!

KK: How long have you been journaling and what purpose does it serve for you?

KL: 🇩🇪 ich begann mit dem Journaling und Planen im September 2014, als mir auf einem Ausflug mit meinem kleinen Sohn mein Handy in eine öffentliche Toilette viel (uhrgs!) und alle Termine futsch waren. Da besann ich mich darauf, dass ich in der Schulzeit immer einen Schulplaner führte und wie viel Spaß mir das eigentlich machte. Ich dachte wie schön es wäre, wenn ich das wieder tun würde nach dem Motto back to the roots zurück zum analogen leben. Dann, so dachte ich, könnte mir so etwas wie der Verlust meines Handys nichts mehr ausmachen. Seitdem bin ich mehr on fire denn je. Das Planen brauche ich, um mich besser strukturieren und organisieren zu können. Ich bin Mutter, arbeite 30 Stunden pro Woche im Büro und bin nebenbei freischaffende Künstlerin, Autorin und Illustratorin und gebe Workshops. Bei so einem Pensum ist man ohne eine gute Planung verloren. Das Journaling brauche ich, um mich kreativ ausleben zu können, Erinnerungen festhalten zu können und um mich entspannen und vom Alltag abschalten zu können. Und ich kann es nur jedem wärmstens empfehlen, denn Schreiben wirkt therapeutisch und regenerierend wie Schlaf auf das Gehirn.

🇬🇧 I started journaling and planning in September 2014 when, on a trip with my little son, my cell phone fell into a public toilet (urgh)! All my appointments were gone.  I remembered that I always had a school planner when I was in school and how much fun it was to have it.  I thought how nice it would be to do that again, going back to my roots and back to an analogue way of life.  Then, I thought, I wouldn’t mind when something happened like losing my cell phone. Since then I’ve been more on fire than ever. I use planning to be able to structure and organize myself better.  I am a mother, work 30 hours a week in the office and am also a freelance artist, author and illustrator and host workshops.  With such a workload, you are lost without good planning.  I need journaling in order to be able to express myself creatively, to be able to hold on to memories and to relax and switch off from everyday life.  I warmly recommend it to everyone, because writing has a therapeutic and regenerative effect like sleep on the brain.

KK: What or who are some of your inspirations?

KL: 🇩🇪 Meine Inspiration um zu schreiben oder kreativ zu sein ist immer das wahre Leben. Es sind Situationen im Alltag oder Momente die ich vielleicht in der Natur erlebe oder beim Spiele mit meinem Kind. Manchmal ist es vielleicht ein gutes Gespräch mit einem Freund, eine Erfahrung, eine Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit oder ein Tagtraum von dem, was ich mal sein möchte – all das ist inspirierend für mich. Am allermeisten jedoch ist es für mich die Natur und meine Erfahrungen die ich mache.

🇬🇧 My inspiration for writing or being creative is always real life.  There are everyday situations, moments that I may experience in nature or while playing with my child.  Sometimes it may be a good conversation with a friend, an experience, a memory of the past or a daydream about what I want to be – all of these are inspiring to me.  Most of all, however, for me it is nature and the experiences that I have.

KK: I love the designs that you did for the Estie (I would buy them both!) What do you love most about the Estie?

KL: 🇩🇪Vielen Dank für das liebe Kompliment! Ich würde mich über alles freuen, mein Design eines schönen Tages bei Estie wieder zu entdecken! An meinen Esties liebe ich vor allem das unbeschreiblich gute und sorgte Schreibgefühl. Man gleitet wie auf Schlittschuhe über das Papier und die Tinte fließt einfach super gleichmäßig. Das erzeugt bei Schreibnerds wie mir echte Glücksgefühle. Außerdem liebe ich besonders die Marmoroptik und während des Schreibens ertappe ich mich oft dabei, wie ich fasziniert auf die wunderschöne Feder schaue. Das mache ich tatsächlich sonst selten.

🇬🇧 Thank you for the kind compliment!  I would be delighted to discover my design one fine day at Estie!  What I love about my Esties above all is the indescribably good writing experience that makes them feel good.  You slide across the paper like you’re on ice skates and the ink just flows super evenly.  This creates real happiness among writer nerds like me.  I also particularly love the marble look and while writing I often catch myself looking fascinated at the beautiful nib. In fact, I rarely do that with other pens.

KK: What is your current favorite ink and pen combination?

KL: 🇩🇪Meine absolute Lieblingskombi von Stift und Tinte ist nach wie vor der Estie Evergreen mit Diamine 150 Dark Forest Tinte oder mit Monteverde California Teal Tinte.

KK: What do you hope your IG followers learn about you by following you?

KL: 🇩🇪 Meine Instagram Follower bekommen in meinem ArtLeiC Account jede Menge Inspiration zum Schreiben und Kreativsein. Ich zeige meine Handschrift auf Journaling- und Artjournaling-Seiten. Genauso wie meine Illustrationen und meine Liebe zu edlen Schreibgeräten und Leathergoods. Damit möchte ich anregen, die Menschen wieder mehr zum Schreiben und Malen zu bringen und sich auf diese Weise selbst etwas Gutes zu tun. Es macht einfach unglaublichen Spaß und ist so heilsam!

🇬🇧 I hope my Instagram followers get a lot of inspiration for writing and being creative in my ArtLeiC account.  I show my handwriting on journaling and art journaling pages, my illustrations and my love for fine writing instruments and leather goods.  By sharing these things, I would like to encourage people to get back to handwriting and painting more and through these practices do something good for themselves.  It’s just amazing fun and so healing!

KK: What other hobbies do you enjoy?

KL: 🇩🇪 Zu meinem anderen Hobbies gehört das Wanderreiten. Leider habe ich nur noch sehr sehr selten Zeit dazu. Ich lese sehr gern und viel, um zu lernen und zu wachsen. Und generell: mich mit meiner Familie in der Natur aufzuhalten. Nichts ist heilsamer als die Natur.

🇬🇧 My other hobbies are trail riding.  Unfortunately, I rarely have the time to do this.  I love to read to learn and grow.  In general, I love spending time in nature with my family.  Nothing is more healing than nature.

KK: How would you describe your style in three words?

KL: 🇩🇪 Meinen Stil in drei Worte zu fassen ist fast unmöglich, aber lass es mich so ausdrücken: Detailverliebt, naturverbunden, freidenkend.
Ich lasse mich ungern in eine Schublade oder Kategorie stecken. Immer wenn man denkt: „Ah sie ist dieses“, dann schlage ich einen Haken und mache jenes, verstehst Du? Mein Stil ist eine Mischung aus vielen verschiedenen Stilen. Mal Vintage, mal Crossover, mal modern, mal verrückt. Immer jedoch anders als man denkt und immer gerne mit dem kleinen Nebeneffekt, Dich zum Nachdenken und Handeln anzuregen. Das Leben ist bunt hat keine Schubladen

🇬🇧 To put my style in three words is almost impossible, but let me put it this way: attention to detail, close to nature, free thinking. I don’t like to be pigeonholed or fixed into a category.  Whenever you think: “Ah she is this”, then I tick the box and do that, you know?  My style is a mix of many different styles.  Sometimes vintage, sometimes crossover, sometimes modern, sometimes crazy.  But always different than you think and I’m always happy if I encourage others to think it over and act. Life is colorful and there are no boxes to be put in!
